The benefits of curcumin (the active ingredient in turmeric) have been well known for decades. Strong evidence suggests that curcumin could play a positive role in the management of disease conditions caused by chronic oxidative and inflammatory stress, for example, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoarthritis as well as cancer.

Delivery challenges

Although in vivo and in vitro studies on curcumin have shown promising results, the low bioavailability and efficacy in human trials have been a major stumbling block towards its widespread adoption by clinicians. Free-form curcumin is highly unstable and is rapidly eliminated from the system, making it difficult to achieve therapeutic relevant concentrations in the blood and target tissues. The metabolites of curcumin on glucuronidation do not have the same efficacy as the native free form. Many strategies have been adopted to overcome the bioavailibility problem, such as piperine and bio-oil formulations, but these are associated with gastric problems if used for prolonged periods. Piperine is also known to inhibit the metabolism of other drugs, limiting its use.


The patented Solid Lipid Curcumin Particle (SLCPTM) Technology enables Longvida® to cross the blood-brain barrier and provide effective amounts of free curcumin at acceptable daily doses. Clinical trials have shown that Longvida® improves neurocognitive function, hippocampal function and mood in healthy older adults. Besides boosting healthy brain ageing, this is significant in diseases like Alzheimer’s.


The anti-inflammatory nature of curcumin also has potential in ameliorating the effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. These therapies are non specific and also attack normal cells in the body. This can dramatically increase the inflammation and oxidative stress in the body. The effects are seen especially in the oral cavity and is called mucositis (inflammation of the oral mucous membrane). Available in capsule and lozenges form.


Osteoarthritis is a major cause of morbidity, physical limitation and disability in older adults. It has caused widespread use of NSAIDs and COX-2 inhibitors. Safety concerns of these medications include gastrointestinal erosions, cardiovascular risks and hypertension. In a study with Longvida® Curcumin, in human subjects, it was concluded that Longvida® has equal efficacy as Ibuprofen, an OTC not recommended for long-term daily use. It was found to be faster acting with 35-40% reduction in pain as compared to 10-15% reduction with Ibuprofen, in the first 30 days. Longvida® also showed greater reduction in WOMAC score in the first 30 days, indicating greater joint benefit.

Clinical Studies

Longvida® Optimized Curcumin® was designed by neuroscientists at UCLA to deliver bio-efficacious levels of free curcumin to target various tissues, including the brain. Longvida® uses a special coating of highly purified fatty acids and phospholipids, which protects curcumin particles from the acidic pH in the digestive tract. It binds to chylomicrons ( fat transporter cells), enabling transportation via the lymphatic system, thereby bypassing the liver. This reduces exposure to metabolic enzymes, maintaining a large part of Longvida® curcumin in its free form. Longvida can be detected in the body even after 24 hours.
