Frequently Asked Questions

Turmeric is a spice that contains many ingredients including curcuminoids. Curcumin is an active ingredient which makes up around 2-5% of turmeric. This means to get an effective dose of curcumin, one would have to consume huge quantities of turmeric which is not practical.

Piperine ( Black pepper) can help increase the bioavailability ( The amount of ingested product minus the amount that is excreted ) by as much as 2000%. This means that there is an enhanced concentration which is available to act in the body. Piperine by itself is a good anti-oxidant so it will amplify the effects of curcumin when taken together.

Piperine + curcumin formulations are excellent when used for a short period of time like in the case of injury healing or post cancer treatment like chemotherapy or radiotherapy. This helps bring down inflammation and mucositis which are side effects of cancer treatment. For long term use switching to a formulation not containing piperine is recommended. Long term use of piperine is not recommended and can cause gastric ulcers in some cases. Nature Trust has launched a non piperine formulation of curcumin which does not contain piperine yet is highly bioavailable. This formulation is more recommended when using curcumin long term for conditions of Neurology, osteoarthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and general wellness.

Always consult a doctor before you start any supplementation. This is even more important when one has pre-existing conditions and is under medication for the same. Piperine increases the intestinal permeability of the lining of the intestine (increasing bioavailability) but may affect the dosage and efficacy of other medications.

Recommended Dosage

Curcumin dosages often vary from 500 mg to 10,000 mg per day depending on individual health needs and specific conditions being treated. When starting curcumin supplements, it is recommended to adhere to lower dosages and gradually adjust while monitoring health impacts. Always consult a healthcare provider before initiating curcumin supplementation to establish the best dosage for your circumstances.

Contra-indications for curcumin

  • Individuals who are on blood-thinning medications, such as warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix), and aspirin, are typically advised against taking curcumin supplements
  • People with bleeding disorders should exercise caution when considering curcumin supplementation as this compound may interfere with normal blood clotting processes
  • Curcumin may lower blood sugar levels, which is particularly important for individuals with diabetes. Supplementation could enhance the effects of diabetic medications, potentially leading to hypoglycemia. It is crucial for people with diabetes to consult their healthcare provider prior to starting curcumin supplements to ensure their blood sugar levels remain stable and to adjust any medications as necessary.
  • Curcumin is considered likely unsafe during pregnancy when taken in medicinal amounts. It may induce uterine contractions or bleeding, raising concerns for pregnant women
  • Individuals with gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) should also be cautious with curcumin, as it may exacerbate symptoms related to stomach problems
  • Individuals with Gall bladder stones history should avoid curcumin
